A Brief Guide to Essential Boat Maintenance Tips

Just like other vehicles out there, boats also need maintenance in order to work properly throughout their lifespan. However, for boats, maintenance is more important because you don’t want your boat to break down in the middle of the water with no one to tow it.

Boat maintenance includes multiple tasks, some of which you can do on your own, while others may need professional attention. In the below paragraphs, we will outline a brief guide to walk you through all the essential tips that are needed to keep your boat in the best shape possible.

1. Make Sure to Clean it Regularly

Keeping your boat clean is the first step to ensuring a well-maintained boat. Whether you are using it after a year or just a couple of days, it is recommended to clean it before you take it for a ride. Cleaning your boat from the outside will not only increase its beauty but also prevent the spread of bugs on the inside.

Moreover, cleaning the boat protects its overall structure and keeps the finishing in place. There is a lot of salt in the river or lake water, which can cause the finish to erode, abrase, and scratch in most places. However, it is recommended to use safe materials and avoid toxic substances when cleaning the boat

2. Keep the Engine Maintained Well

Boats use a motor in place of an engine to power themselves. By taking some simple measures, you can keep the engine in good shape for a long time. It is recommended to take your vehicle to a professional mechanic who knows the manufacturer’s recommendations and does the job accordingly.

However, if you are doing it on your own, you will have to first learn the manufacturer’s manual and follow the required steps. First of all, you will have to make sure that the fuel tank is open and engine mount screw clamps are secured in place.

After this, you will have to check the propeller to see if there is any fishing line caught up or excessive oil build-up.

3. Check Boat Batteries

The batteries of your boat need to be maintained just like its engine. Expert technicians recommend checking your boat batteries after every ride and looking for battery fluid levels. If you see that fluid levels are below the lead plates, it is a must to refill it with distilled water.

Also, ensure that all connections are clean and the terminals are also bright. To prevent short circuits, make sure that boots on battery terminals are well placed, and that there is no acid on the surface.

4. Wash the Engine After Every Ride

The engine is the most important part of your boat, so it is crucial to keep it maintained. One thing you can do to ensure this is to flush your engine after every ride. The river and lake water is often salty, and it can harm your engine in a bad way.

Flushing the engine will wash out every last salt crystal and will protect the internals from getting damaged. You can refer to the operating manual of your boat to have an idea of how to flush your boat’s engine.
